Aggrieved customers of gold trading hub gone bust, Menzgold have taken to the street in protest that has seen them burn down images of the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his cousin finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, MyNewsGh.com has filed.
The customers who got wind of the President’s visit to the region to attend a Zongo Development Ministry event welcomed president Akufo Addo to the region with a street protest and burning of his pictures.
Some of the angry customers who openly professed their affiliation with the NPP burned their NPP membership cards and images of the president and swore to vote out the Akufo-Addo in 2020 election.
One of the images of their placards sighted by MyNewsGh.com said Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta “is a greedy man” as they burned and stamped on pictures of President Akufo-Addo.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has said the entire protest is an illegality. According to the police, the aggrieved customers of the Gold trading company, Menzgold did not notify them of their mass protest.
The group who call themselves Concerned Menzgold Customers’ have so far been the most violent and yet most political group yet since the Menzgold saga as none has as yet directly blamed the president or the finance minister.
The police in a statement said the organisers of the demonstration failed to meet the police to plan for the exercise.
The organisers may have turned down the invitation realising the intention of the police to postpone the demonstration, our sister media station 3news.com had reported.
NAM 1, Akufo-Addo, Otunfuo, Chief Imam, JAK
Some of the customers of the Gold-Trading hub Menzgold two weeks ago were reported to be accusing President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, His Majesty Otumfuo Osei-Tutu II, Asantehene, His Eminence Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, National Chief Imam of Ghana and former President John Kufuor of being indirect accomplices of the Menzgold ‘scam’as MyNewsGh.com reported then.
The angry Menzgold customers said they were encouraged to trust the gold dealership because of what they saw as an “endorsement” Nana Appiah Mensah got from these four powerful personalities in Ghana.
“For a man who had unexplained wealth, it was such meetings that were going to gain him legitimacy and acceptance and the President certainly contributed to giving a potential fraudster the legitimacy he needed.” one of them wailed.
“I have personally heard accounts of Menzgold clients who say the photo of NAM1 with the President convinced them that the business was genuine and that made them invest in it. And, can you really blame them when the NAM1 being condemned as a fraudster now was given access to the father of the land? ” a concerned Ghanaian, N.Y Obuoba wrote.
On President Kufuor’s part, JAK is alleged to have praised Menzgold when the dubious gold trading company gave him a customized gold monument medals with an engraved image of him on it during the launch of the three-day Art Festival at the Golden Tulip Hotel, Accra, on 1st June 2018.
The former president Kufuor even endorsed the creation of several of the Customized gold monument medals to be auctioned to raise funds for his 80 at 80 project (JAK foundation). The JAK foundation has gone quiet since the shutdown of Menzgold.
