“Government cannot fight corruption. All what we the NPP said on campaign platforms were just mere political gimmicks because when you go to court you need hardcore evidence to prove your case. They were political talk”, these were the exact words of the Former Deputy Attorney General under Ex-President Kufuor regime, Mr. Kwame Osei Prempeh in an interview MyNewsGh.com monitored on government’s resolve to fight corruption.
He rather blamed state agencies saying some investigations carried on by these agencies turned out not strong enough to be able to provide empirical evidence for the prosecution of people who have been accused of corruption.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the 2016 elections campaigned vigorously on corruption and criticized elements within the then John Dramani Mahama’s administration of being corrupt.
In most instances in their campaign, the NPP made Ghanaians believe they were going to arrest and jail corrupt officials of the past National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration but close to two years into office much has not been seen in this regard.
However, things have changed as most Ghanaians have shown disappointment in the Nana Addo led government for not being able to fight corruption after it set up Office of the Special Prosecutor with Martin Alamisi Burnes Kaiser Amidu as the head.
Mr. Kwame Osei Prempeh who is also worried about the development stated “the Attorney General does not conduct investigations. The work of investigations lies on the Police, CID and EOCO and after they are done, that is when the Attorney is able to prosecute”.
The former Deputy Minister and also Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Nsuta Kwaman Beposo constituency of the Ashanti Region further revealed that while in office, investigations carried out by some agencies of the state turned out to be nothing the state could depend on to carry out prosecutions.
“It is not the fault of the government that it is unable to prosecute corrupt officials but rather investigative agencies have not been able to conduct a proper investigation to prove to the court that indeed they are guilty of the act”. He added
Speaking to foot soldiers of the party who feel aggrieved about the delays in prosecutions, he noted that they must understand that, the government cannot fight corruption explaining that all that the NPP said on campaign platforms were mere political gimmicks
“When you go to court, there you need evidence. They were political talks. When you are on campaign platforms, it is very easy to say anything”, he noted
